Surrogates

Review:     3.5 Stars

I found this movie refreshing on many levels. It was something new out of Hollywood, not a re-hash of old movies like we’re seeing a lot of lately. The theme of the movie is also completely plausible given even the current state of technology today. And who wouldn’t want to live a life without boundaries.

The movie is not without it’s moments however, that are a little on the corny side and once you get over the fact that the “surry’s” are supposed to look a little plasticy, the move flows well. All in all I found this movie very enjoyable. Not Bruce Willis’ most action packed movie by far, but I think he did a great job on it. Definitely worth the ticket to see on the big screen..

Pandorum

Review:     4 Stars

For a movie with a rating of 14A Pandorum has more than its fair share of chills, jumps and spooky moments, though some of them were predictable I still got a kick out of it.  The story is well thought out, flows nicely, and has a few twists in it that surprised me.   The end was a little bit of a disappointment, but not enough to detract from the movie as a whole.

I noticed some scenes reminiscent of both Alien and Event Horizon.  For people who enjoyed these movies they will probably like Pandorum as well.  There seems to be a limited showing of this film in some areas so if you get the chance to see it on the big screen I would take it.

Sorority Row

Review:     0 Stars

The only way I was going to get through this movie was to take the perspective of a first time viewer into one of these done to death films.  I really tried hard to find something I liked about this movie.  The only thing I could come up with was the over exaggerated sound effects used in the killing scenes.  Unfortunately it still left me wanting my money back.

A  Sorority prank turns bad with an accidental death of a friend.  The group hides/disposes the body in hopes they can leave this tragic nightmare behind them.  Just when they thought they were safe, someone in a scary cape with a pimped-out tire iron starts to knock them off, one by one.

Overall the movie lacked the suspense it was trying for, including, the scare factor.  Not worth a ticket and its not going to be much of a renter. Can’t say I didn’t see that conclusion.

Extract

Review:     2 1/2 Stars

I was optimistic about this film going in but unfortunately it was not that great.  I did however enjoy the story, somewhat, and some of the silly characters thrown into the mix,  but it just felt like it was made for TV.  It had very few laughs and was quite dull.  The reason I liked this movie at all is because it is so plain and simple and just relaxing to watch. Extract is a really basic movie with not a lot to offer except that being simple works for this film.  Its a silly story about a company, its owner (Jason Bateman) and the people surrounding his life.  This movie is probably going to rate for most people something like this ….  ” um, yeah, it was alright”, -or- , “it was boring and stupid”.

I am going to have to say that this film marginally made the ‘just a renter‘ category, but, its a renter for those “i just need something to watch tonight” moments.

(500) Days of Summer

Review:    3.5 Stars

Can’t quite put my finger on why i liked this film so much,  it’s a cute and quirky boy meets girl movie that jumps back and forth in a 500 day timeline,  yet is easy to follow.

After boy meets girl, the story takes on a rather different love story, or non-love story for at least one party.  It’s a slow movie with a good pace that kept my interest as the story unfolds.

All in all, a good movie, but I’m leaning on… ‘Better as a renter‘.

The Informant!

Review:     4.5 Stars

This movie is really out there in a good way, a strange bizarre fun ride.  The ride never lets up,  it twists and turns leaving you guessing and anticipating to what comes next.  Funny and brilliant, goofy and classy.  The game show type music, the bad hair and clothing fit the look and feel of the movie perfectly.

Matt Damon is great in this film as he plays one of the most interesting characters I’ve seen in quite some time; and he does it beautifully.  I believe its best not to elaborate on his character do to the fact that it really needs to be discovered  for yourself.  Definitely worth a ticket to see this one.  I will probably rent it once its out on DVD just to see it again.

Jennifer’s Body

Review:     3 Stars

This is one of those movies that almost can’t make up it’s mind as to what it’s trying to accomplish. Is it a teen movie? Is it a comedy? Is it a thriller? Megan Fox in her first starring roll, plays Jennifer. A young teen who gets mixed up with a band which dabbles in occultism. When a sacrifice goes bad, Jennifer is possessed with a Demon (specifically a Succubus) who lures men in on pretense of sex and then devours them instead.

This movie has one major merit, the make up crew did a fantastic job on making Megan Fox look truly demonic. One scene in particular is especially horrific, al la “The Exorcist,” that is really about it. The supporting characters carry Ms. Fox through the movie. This woman needs acting lessons.  Period. If Megan hadn’t been in the movie, it might have rated higher in my books.

In a nutshell, if you like thrillers, this one is a renter, and nothing more.

White Out

Review:    1 1/2 Stars

Whiteout started fairly well with a good action sequence, but it became pretty mundane and predictable after that.  The trailers had made us, and others, think it was some sort of ‘monster under the ice’ movie but this turned out not to be the case, it was just a run of the mill thriller after all.  The action sequences were pretty good, but the plot was not, and I guessed too much of it before it was revealed.

Parts of the movie were also just plain silly or implausible and if you are picky, like me, that will detract from the movie quite a bit.  The end, when it came, was quite predictable and the last 10 minutes of the movie I would pretty much describe as boring.

If you like Kate Beckinsale then this would be a good renter, but otherwise I’d skip it and wait for it to make it to TV. In short, .. Not even worth renting.

Very disappointing movie.  It was just bad, ugly bad.  I was getting bored and wanted it to just end about half way through.  All the action sequences were fast shaking camera movements with rapid cut and paste shot angles.  There was little or no let-up to even see what was happening in the intensity.  I don’t mind this type of camera work, but please,  you need a few moments to let your eyes breath.  Some really nice slow-motion and cinematography bits that worked well in this film but overall,  I wouldn’t even rent this one ; although the actions scenes might look better on a smaller screen.

I like Gerard Butler, (RocknRolla),  I think he would even make a good James Bond.  I’m a Fan of Michael C. Hall who plays in the TV series Dexter.  I really hope to see these guys in better films in the future.

Review:     4 Stars

Great movie from the start, all the characters intrigued me with all their unique abilities without having to have an in depth story behind them.  They were what they were, each designed with a different talent that never needed to be explained.

It felt like each scene was planed and thought out in great detail with an artistic view.   Overall the story was good, however,  I was a little disappointing in the ending and how short the film was.  At 1Hr 20Min ..  It left me wanting more, but in a good way.

For all those who love animation and appreciate the dynamics of these types of film, this is a must see in the theatre

Also A good renter for those of you who are not sure about seeing an animated film.
