This film review site is based on a simple concept; ‘was the movie worth paying to see in the theatre or not?’ Did It Suck will give you a simple and short review based on the following pondering questions which is a bases for most of the reviews here; in hopes of saving you money:
Like most movie patrons, we all have something to say at the end of the movie, it makes (mostly) good conversation afterwords. Did It Suck wants to help you make a good decision about spending money on a movie.
I remember leaving the theatre after a show, walking out the doors to here a frustrated gentleman say “That was the worst movie I’ve seen!” He continued … “I hardly ever go to the movies, and i can’t believe I wasted my money on that one.” I felt bad for the guy, I wanted to give him a big hug, pat him on the back and say, “I hear you man, I hear you” Well, OK, maybe not quite. It does however put into perspective what I believe Did It Suck is here for. Nobody wants to waste their money on a bad film!
A different and simple approach is taken by the Did It Suck Critics when reviewing a movie. Its so simple that it makes perfect cents (pun intended). So the question is, ‘how do the Critics determine what is worth a ticket and what is not.’ Well….. Lets look at a genre like ‘ Action’ and dissect a little of what the Critics look for to be deemed, theater worthy.
(1) Special Effects … Are you going to miss anything renting the movie? Is the smaller screen going to take away from how it’s represented on the big screen? Sure, today we have plasma HDMI TVs and Blu-ray HD players that have digital super coolness with integrated ’WoW!’; but sometimes you just can’t beat that B I G screen .
(2) Sound Effects… There is nothing like sitting in a theatre hearing a thunderous explosion rip past from behind you just to make the wall shake and take your hearing along with it. There are some expectations that a big theatre sound system needs to deliver, and if the films sound director ‘keys-it’ up well, it can be brilliant.
(3) Overall quality of the movie… Direction of the story, cinematography, keeping it visually interesting, easy to follow and or watch etc. As an example, some action movies have a tendency to overload on fast camera movement and effects that you can’t really make out.
A good action movie also needs those ‘WoW, Cool!‘ or, “Holy Crap-cakes!, That was insane!” moments that you verbally blurt out. This gives a good indication that you’re involved in the movie and are having a good time; take me on a ride that makes me wanna say “Yeah baby, Yeah!”
(4) The Entertainment Value… This is the bottom line on most reviewed movies. This is also what the Did It Suck Critics use to overlook the shortcomings of a film. Sometimes action flicks (and other movies) have poor story lines or bad acting, or both. This is where the entertainment value applies. Did I have fun or was I entertained enough to overlook the poor story or bad acting etc.
Big Action with Big Sound, cool special effects and/or impressive CGI all play apart in a good action film. “He got blowed up real good!” (SCTV) 1976-1984
Not everyone is going to agree with the reviews, and that’s OK because, we are all human and we are all different. Please keep in mind that the reviews are all based on a our simple concept, which I believe, is also looking out for the best interests of Did It Suck movie patrons.
