Cowboys & Aliens

Did It Suck Movie Review: 2.5 Stars     Time: 1hr 48min‎‎     Rated: 14-A

Saddle-up and ride out into the old west where laser guns be a blaze’n

Cowboys & Aliens is an 2011 American science fiction Western/action film starring Daniel CraigHarrison Ford, and Olivia Wilde. The film, directed by Jon Favreau, is based on the 2006 graphic novel of the same name created by Scott Mitchell Rosenberg, which in turn was an expansion of a Far Side comic by Gary Larson.

Did It Suck Review: This is by far an old west movie with more Cow than Alien.  This was not a horrible film only that it felt like it could have been a “made for TV movie”.  Also,  Joss Whedon might have been some help on this one, when considering his epic Firefly TV series.  What I did enjoy about this movie was it had pretty good representation of the Old West and the story side was really good until the aliens got thrown in to the mix.  It was a good try but I’m going to have to say… Wait For The DVD.

Captain America: The First Avenger

Did It Suck Movie Review: 5 Stars   Time: 2hr 5min‎‎     Rated: PG

Just because you’re a small fry doesn’t mean you have a small heart.

Captain America: The First Avenger is a 2011 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Captain America.  It is the fifth installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  The film was directed by Joe Johnston, written byChristopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, and stars Chris Evans, Tommy Lee JonesHugo WeavingHayley AtwellSebastian StanDominic CooperNeal McDonoughDerek Luke, and Stanley Tucci.  The film tells the story of Steve Rogers, a sickly man from Brooklyn who is transformed into super soldier Captain America to help the war effort. However, Captain America must stop Red Skull, Adolf Hitler’s ruthless head of weaponry and leader of a terrorist organization, who intends to use a mysterious tesseract energy-source for world domination.

Did it Suck Review: An excellent film right from the start.  This movie is very well directed; it has an easy to follow story line with enjoyable characters through out.  Most of the action is close to the end of the film and well worth the wait.  This is a well rounded movie that is put together nicely.  I enjoyed this film a lot and I’m happy to say that it is Worth a Ticket.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Part 2

Did It Suck Movie Review: 5 Stars   Time: 2hr 10min‎‎     Rated: PG

True friends are loyal to the end, sometimes, the end comes too quick.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 is a 2011 fantasy film directed by David Yates and the second of two films based on the novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling. It is the eighth and the final instalment in the Harry Potter film series, written by Steve Kloves and produced by David Heyman, David Barron and Rowling. The story continues to follow Harry Potter’s quest to find and destroy Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes.

Did It Suck Review: The second part to the Deathly Hallows and last chapter of this fantastic series is what HP fans have been waiting for.  As with part 1, this was an excellent movie.  The overall flow and dynamics of this movie were good.  I am sad and happy at the same time to see this series come to an end, and at the same time, glad to see that the last movie was not a let-down.  Well Worth a Ticket.

Super 8

Did It Suck Movie Review: 4 Stars   Time: 2hr 35min‎‎     Rated: PG

Be kind to aliens; you have a much better chance they won’t eat you.

Super 8 is a 2011 American science fiction film written and directed by J. J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg. The film stars Joel CourtneyElle Fanning, and Kyle Chandler … The film tells the story of a group of children who are filming their own Super 8 movie when a train derails, releasing a dangerous presence into their town.

Did It Suck Review: Leave it to Mr.Spielberg to start a film like it’s a ‘feel good’ kids story, then throw in a monster.   The overall feel to the movie is set in a small town around the Late 70′s early 80′s.  You get a nice overview of the peaceful town, era, and the kids characters from the start of the film.  The train wreak was the highlight of the film, and it was fantastic.  What I really liked was how little effort it took in getting to know the characters and emotionally connect with them; this is what made the movie as good as it was.  I felt I got my moneys worth on this film, however, as good as this movie was, the train wreak was really the only thing worth seeing on the big screen,  Wait For The DVD.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Did It Suck Movie Review: 4 Stars   Time: 2hr 35min‎‎     Rated: PG

When you have big robots helping you defend your planet, it’s best not to keep them in the dark about things.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon (also known as Transformers 3) is a 2011 science fiction/action film, part of the Transformers film series, directed by Michael Bay and produced by Steven Spielberg.

Did It Suck? I’m am so glad that this movie didn’t suck.  I felt that Transformers 3 was better then #2 in a few different ways.  What I noticed first off is that the CGI was directed much better then before, including, adding in some slow motion effects and keeping things less shaky.  The other important aspect of this film was it felt like they thought the story out and didn’t try to rush the movie.  The only two things that really disappointed me was, no Megan Fox and not having a longer roll for Ken Jeong.  I did see this movie in 3D, but, didn’t think that it was worth the extra cost.  Worth A Ticket.

Green Lantern

Did It Suck Movie Review: 3 Stars   Time: 1hr 45min‎‎     Rated: PG

Green Lantern is a 2011 superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. The film stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, with Martin Campbell directing a script by Greg Berlanti and comic book writers Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, which was subsequently rewritten by Michael Goldenberg.

Did It Suck? Cutting straight to the point, this was a disappointing movie.  It wasn’t a horrible movie, just that it was lacking in many areas, it had all the firework flash with no bang.  I still enjoyed the film but I felt that the movie was rushed, the story had no meat and there was so little background with characters it was hard to make a connection with any of them.  Seeing this movie in 3D is not worth price, and it’s just bearly worth a regular ticket so, Wait For The DVD.

X-Men First Class

Did It Suck Movie Review: 4 Stars   Time: 2hr 11min‎‎     Rated: PG

Sometimes it’s hard to choose a side when you see the best of both sides

X-Men: First Class takes you back to the beginnings of Charles and Eric’s friendship and where mutants start to come out of the wood-work.  Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender), had somewhat normal lives, Pre Professor X and Magneto.  Charles and Eric worked together to help other mutants find their place among the rest of the world.  Charles and Eric’s close friendship starts to become strained when they discover that they have different ideas on the coexistence of mutants and humans.

Did It Suck? Lots of talk and little action in this movie but it was done well.  Having common knowledge of the X-men is a must if you are going to enjoy this film.  The films focal point surrounds the lives and friendship of Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr (James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender) before they became Professor X and Magneto.  The movie already had a solid script to go on being a well published comic.  What I was interested to see was how well the actors took to their characters.  I am happy to report that this was a fantastic X-man movie, and arguably, probably the best of the series.  If your not an X-man fan then this movie is not for you.  As much as I liked this movie, and felt I got my monies worth, I have to say Wait For the DVD.  There is nothing you will miss seeing it at home.

Tron: Legacy

Did It Suck Review:  4 Stars   Time: 2hr 7min‎‎     Rated: PG

There’s a whole new world to be discovered and explored, the only limit is set by the user.

Tron: Legacy is a 2010 American science fiction film produced by Walt Disney Pictures.  It is a sequel to the 1982 film Tron.  Joseph Kosinski makes his feature film directorial debut with Tron: Legacy, while the previous film’s director, Steven Lisberger, returns as a producer. Jeff Bridges reprises his roles as Kevin Flynn and Clu, while Bruce Boxleitner reprises his roles as Alan Bradley and Tron. Garrett Hedlund portrays Flynn’s now-adult son, Sam. The other cast members include Olivia WildeBeau Garrett, and Michael Sheen.

Did It Suck? What made me happy to see in this sequel is that they kept the same look and feel as the original Tron.  Not to say that they didn’t upgrade the overall imagery,  just that they didn’t over d0 it, making the world of Tron look only slightly better.  What was disappointing was the story and the 3D effects.  The story was a little flat and I was hoping for more action.  The action bits were finished just as fast as they started leaving you wanting more out of each scene.  This movie was filmed for 3D and graphically was good, however, they made no real effort to capitalize on what could have been the best 3D movie ever.  Overall I was quite happy with the movie and the extra cost for the 3D was still Worth a Ticket. The only question that still remains for me is … What did they spend that $170 million budget on?

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

Did It Suck Review: 3 Stars   Time: 1hr 52min‎‎     Rated: PG

Never forget your worth or the place that made you who you are.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is a 2010 3D fantasy-adventure film based on The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, the third published novel in C. S. Lewis‘s epic fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia. It is the third installment in The Chronicles of Narnia film series from Walden Media, the first in the series to be distributed by 20th Century Fox and the first one to be released in Digital 3D.

Set a year after the events of the second film, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, the two younger Pevensies Edmund (Skandar Keynes) and Lucy (Georgie Henley) are transported back to Narnia along with their cousin Eustace Scrubb (Will Poulter). They join the new King of Narnia, Caspian (Ben Barnes) in his quest to rescue seven lost lords to save Narnia from a corrupting evil that resides on a dark island. Each character is tested as they journey to the home of the great lion Aslan at the far ends of the world.

Did It Suck? I enjoyed this movie a little better then the second movie, but as expected, it fails in comparison to the first film.  A much better performance all around by everyone, the characters were solid and the acting was better in this movie.  For one particular actor I need to say, brilliant  job Mr. Will Poulter, I enjoyed your roll the best.  The film making for this adventure was a little slow and I found myself thinking in a British accent…  ”Come’on, lets get a move on, I haven’t got all day”.  Over all I really enjoyed this movie, I felt the entertainment value wasn’t too bad, although, I would have rather paid less to see it in 2D.  In my opinion, even though the 3D was good,  the film is not worth paying the extra coin to see it in 3D.  Unless you really liked the first two movies, Wait For The DVD.

Faster

Did It Suck Review: 3.5 Stars   Time: 1hr 38min‎‎     Rated: 14-A

Revenge is a serious matter in the hands of a fearless man

Faster is a 2010 American action film directed by George Tillman, Jr. and written by brothers Tony Gayton and Joe Gayton. It stars Dwayne JohnsonBilly Bob ThorntonCarla GuginoMoon BloodgoodOliver Jackson-Cohen, and Maggie Grace.

Did It Suck? For anyone looking for a plain old, easy to follow action flick, Faster has it covered.  Nothing exciting or extra ordinary in this film, just some hard hitting action with a simple story that keeps you entertained right to the end.  The only thing I can really complain about in this movie is the typical “knew that was going to happen’ ending.  Otherwise a good action flick.  Though this movie delivered what it was supposed to, and I felt I got my monies worth, the Big Screen is not needed to enjoy this one.  Wait For a The DVD unless your hard up for some action and need a fix.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1

Did It Suck Review: 4 Stars   Time: 2hr 30min‎‎     Rated: PG

It’s a very dark time for Harry and his friends and their battle is just beginning.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a 2010/2011 two-part epic fantasy film directed by David Yates, written by Steve Kloves and based on the novel of the same name by J. K. Rowling. The film is produced by Rowling along with David Heyman and David Barron.

Plot: The two parts form the seventh and final instalment in the Harry Potter film series, with the story following Harry Potter on a quest to find and destroy Lord Voldemort‘s secret to immortality

Did It Suck? Followers of the Harry Potter movie series, not the book worms, should no doubt enjoy this movie. I can’t speak for the book readers because I feel I wouldn’t be able to give a non-bias opinion on a movie if I have already read the book. This 7th film in the series was done exceptionally well in comparison to the last two movies.  Though this movie was slow, and had little or no action, the direction of the film was done without feeling like it was being pushed into trying to fit everything into a 2.5hr movie.  I found Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows a much darker film with a greater sense of emotion portrayed through the characters.  There are a few stupid  character moments that question the writing of the story where you find our heroes wondering off into danger alone.  But overall  I am quite happy to say, that even though the Big Screen adds very little to the experience of this movie, it is still Worth a Ticket.

RED

Did It Suck Review: 4.5 Stars     Time: 1hr 51min‎‎     Rated: PG‎‎

The worst thing that can happen to an Ex secret agent is retirement.

Plot: Red is an action-comedy film based on the comic book limited series of the same name created by Warren Ellis and Cully Hamner, and published by the DC Comics imprint Homage. The film stars Bruce Willis with Robert Schwentke directing a screenplay by Jon Hoeber and Erich Hoeber.  Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, is now living a quiet life in retirement. However, he begins to feel lonely with retirement and strikes up a relationship with Sarah (Parker), a customer service agent working for Frank’s pension office in Kansas City. However, his quiet life is disrupted when he is attacked by a hit squad in the middle of the night.

Did It Suck? Unlike some action comedy’s this one uses a simple approach to get the job done making it a very enjoyable film to watch.  There are more giggles then outbursts of laughter during the funny parts in the movie but the tame comedy was done really well and done without trying hard.  The story was great,  smart, well paced and straight-up fun which made-up for a few over-sites.  This film has a nice balance of comedy and action with a good cast and a pretty good story.  The Big Screen ads very little to this movie with only a few good explosions and some gun battles,  however, it is well Worth A Ticket.

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole

Did It Suck Review: 4 Stars     Time: 1hr 30min‎‎     Rated: G

Legends take flight in this Good Vs Evil bird tail.

Plot: Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole is a 2010 computer-animated fantasy film loosely based on the first three books (The CaptureThe Journey, and The Rescue) of the seriesGuardians of Ga’Hoole by Kathryn LaskyZack Snyder directed the film, with Jim SturgessGeoffrey RushRyan KwantenEmily BarclayAnthony LaPaglia, and David Wenham voicing the characters.

Did It Suck? This is one movie I will be adding to my collection.  A beautifully animated film with well directed cinematography.  Some of the best animation comes from the camera angles during the flight scenes and slow motion effects.  The Story moves along at a reasonable pace although some kids under 7 might get bored through some scenes.  I really would have liked the film to have gone more in depth with the story, but, at 1.5 hrs they did a good job.  The 3D version of the film is quite good and worth paying a little more for it, however, if your on a family outing you might want to settle for the regular Big Screen version.  Worth a Ticket.

The American

Did It Suck Review: 3.5 Stars     Time: 1hr 45min‎‎     Rated: 14-A‎‎

Some men with secrets are only dangerous if you find out what the secret is.

Plot: The American is a 2010 American thriller film directed by Anton Corbijn and starring George ClooneyThekla ReutenViolante PlacidoIrina Björklund, and Paolo Bonacelli. It is an adaptation of the 1990 novel A Very Private Gentleman by Martin Booth. Alone among assassins, Jack (George Clooney) is a master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact Larry that his next assignment will be his last.

Did It Suck?
Much to my surprise I liked this film for what it had to offer.  This is a visually pleasing, well directed and story driven film.  Clooney’s performance was excellent and I felt his character fit well with his personal persona.  You really need to love movies and have an interest in characters with depth moving through a story line that needs your attention for this film. On the Did It Suck scale side of things I’m going to suggest Waiting For The DVD. This is because, other than the visual cinematography and story, there’s nothing but a slow and boring film for most movie goer’s.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Review:     4 Stars     Rated:     PG     Time: 1hr 53min

We all have baggage but Scotts new girl friend has 7 X’s worth, and stuff.

Plot: Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is a 2010 American action comedy film directed by Edgar Wright based on the comic book series Scott Pilgrim by Bryan Lee O’Malley. The film is about Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) meeting the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). In order to win Ramona over, Scott learns that he must defeat Ramona’s seven evil exes, who are coming to kill him.

Did It Suck? This was a semi-fast paced and inventive film.  Part comic book adventure, part video game,  and part live action cartoon rolled up into one fun movie, and stuff.   Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is more of a weird silly movie then it is cheesy, yet at the same time, it’s cute and full of laughs.  The supporting characters are quite good and everything seems to fit nicely in the way this movie works.  I really liked the character of Kim (Alison Pill), the girl who plays the drums in the band; I don’t think she blinks through the whole movie.  Overall this film was fun and I felt I got my money’s worth, and stuff.

Final thoughts… I’m sitting on the fence with this movie because even though I really enjoyed this film, the big screen brings very little to it.   I think for most it’s a probably best to Wait For The DVD.  Anyone who enjoys different and silly movies It’s Worth a Ticket.
