Kick Ass

Review:     4 Stars     Rated: 18-A

Look-out bad guys there’s a new hero in town and he’s nothing short of average.  Kick-Ass is a superhero film based on the comic book of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita, Jr. The film was directed by Matthew Vaughn, who co-produced the film with actor Brad Pitt, and co-wrote the screenplay with Jane Goldman.  More info here

Plot: This is A story of an ordinary teenager, Dave Lizewski, who sets out to become a real-life superhero only to get caught up in a bigger fight and gets in way over his head.  Will our fearless crime fighter be tossed into the cold streets never to be heard from again? Not this time; Kick-Ass is saved by none other than Big Daddy and Hit-Girl who have an agenda of their own…. kill the Bad guy who destroyed their lives.

Did It Suck? So watching the trailers I figured this is going to be some cheese-ball action comedy.  Well after seeing this movie I was extremely shocked at how good this film was.  This is not a kid’s movie by far, in fact, it’s quit the opposite.  It has very harsh language and violent gore.  The dynamics of this film are impressive and key to making this movie work the way it did.  There is not much I didn’t like about this film, however, I could have done with a little less of the foul language from 12 year old  Chloe Moretz (Hit-Girl).  She drops the ‘C’ word among other colourful lines.  Worth a Ticket.

The Book of Eli

Review:     2.5 Stars     Rated:     R

30 years of walking through the sands of an aftermath is going to make your lips a little chapped.  The Book of Eli takes us on an adventure into a desolate post war future.

Eli (Denzel Washington), is carrying a book that holds great value to the post war survivors.  Most of them can’t read but for those who can, they want this book for reasons of their own; to them its worth more than its weight in water.  Eli is on a mission to take this book west to an unknown destination, but he’ll know it when he gets there.  On his little quest he picks up an unwanted tag-along,  Solara (Mila Kunis), who proves to be somewhat useful along the way.

Incredible post apocalyptic scenery and some cool action sequences; and, thats all I can say I liked about this film. Slow and dragged-out and the story had a lot of loose-ends, so needless to say, I was quite disappointed.  Defiantly Wait For the DVD, but its bordering on almost not worth renting.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

Review:     3.5 Stars     Rated: PG-13

Creativity in the hands of directer Terry Gilliam, (The Adventures of Baron Munchausen -and- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas),  gives us an interesting movie that can only be described as an adventuristic story in a fantastical imaginatory playground of quantitve proportions.

The great Dr. Parnassus, was granted immortality after winning a bet with the Devil.  The good Doctor falls in love, and the Devil wagers yet another deal to give up his mortality for youth.  But making a deal with the Devil never seems to go in ones own favour as now his only daughter is caught in her fathers selfish dealings.

NOTE: Johnny Depp,  Jude Law and Colin Farrell step up after Heath Ledger dies during the production.

Going into this movie with no expectations was the best thing I could have done.  I walked out of the theater still trying to figure out what I just saw, but, at the same time was very pleased with the level of unique and imaginary creativity that was done in this film.   Although the movie was a little slow I didn’t feel too bad paying to see such an interesting film, however, I think that most people will want to Wait For The DVD.

Men Who Stare at Goats

Review:     3.5 Stars

In the words of Weird Al Yankovic, ”Dare To Be Stupid“.  Men Who Stare at Goats is stupidly good in a serious way.  Based on a true story of actual non-events or so they say.

We follow Bob Wilton, a reporter played by Ewan McGregor as he tags along side a Super Spy named Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who developed Super Powers of the mind thanks to secret government training.

All in all this movie was nothing special, not much of a story and yet,  it was the funny obscure seriously ridiculousness that kept it interesting to watch.  I laughed more times then I expected to and sometimes just because it was plain stupid. “The little man inside me was screaming like a little girl

With a cast including Jeff Bridges and Kevin Spacey playing smaller rolls that could have been played by anyone,  I still didn’t feel too bad paying for a ticket to see this film.  Some people may find this movie a little off in left field, but I think that was intention.  I’m leaning towards, Worth A Ticket more than not, as its a good movie to see in or out of the theater.

A Serious Man

Review:     4 Stars

A refreshing film from the norm and retro perfect.  The Coen brothers do an amazing job on this film but No Country For Old Men is still my Fav’.  Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg) is an average working man in the 60′s with a wife, two kids, a simple house and a neighbour he finds annoying.  His life starts to fall apart around him and gets kicked, a few times, while he’s down.  Not really a LMAO comedy but it does have its moments.

Little warring:  Quite a few ‘F’ Bombs in this movie, mainly done by the kid actors as part of their rebellious characters.  This being said,  the fowl mouth kids have some of the funniest parts in the movie.

If your a Coen brothers fan then you won’t want to miss this movie while its in theaters;  for the rest,  It’s a a great movie but, Wait For The DVD.

Recommend The Informant as a better pick for your money.

The Informant!

Review:     4.5 Stars

This movie is really out there in a good way, a strange bizarre fun ride.  The ride never lets up,  it twists and turns leaving you guessing and anticipating to what comes next.  Funny and brilliant, goofy and classy.  The game show type music, the bad hair and clothing fit the look and feel of the movie perfectly.

Matt Damon is great in this film as he plays one of the most interesting characters I’ve seen in quite some time; and he does it beautifully.  I believe its best not to elaborate on his character do to the fact that it really needs to be discovered  for yourself.  Definitely worth a ticket to see this one.  I will probably rent it once its out on DVD just to see it again.
