Splice

Review:    4 Stars     Rated:     14-A

There’s a new kid on the block and she’s a little different then most kids we know because, Dren, is a scientific experiment.

Plot: Splice is a  science fiction horror film directed by Vincenzo Natali and starring Adrien Brody and Sarah Polley, who portray two young scientists and lovers who begin involving human DNA in their splicing of animal genes.  These two genetic engineers Clive Nicoli (Adrien Brody) and Elsa Kast (Sarah Polley) achieve fame by successfully splicing together the DNA of different animals, to create incredible new hybrid animals. Now they want to use human DNA in a hybrid that could revolutionize science and medicine. But when the pharmaceutical company that funds their research forbids it, Clive and Elsa secretly conduct their own experiments in the pursuit of even greater scientific discovery.

Did It Suck? This movie is extremely interesting, weird, and messed-up all at the same time.  The film is acted and directed quite well though there were a few parts that never fit together or not explained well.

- As a general rule I try not to pull movies apart looking for every flaw,  I look at each movie for it’s entertainment value.

The movie moves along well even though it is quite slow and far from suspenseful.  It does however have some jump moments and fright scenes but nothing too unexpected.  A very good movie to see and Worth a Ticket for those Sci-Fi and horror fans, but nothing will be missed seeing it on a smaller screen.  So … For everyone else, Wait for the DVD.

For a hot topic this movie had lots of promise. There are countless reasons for gene modification, cloning and tampering that can both enhance the human race and potentially hinder it.

Darwin spoke about survival of the fittest and when we start playing with the natural order of life it no longer becomes about the fittest but the most unnatural.

This film takes the aspect about gene modifying to gene splicing and tries to reach audience on an emotional evel along with the to characters to give birth to the subject.

One of them is emotionally attached like a mother and the other is emotionally attached like a lover. And this is where the emotionality of the film becomes creepy and sickennng.

    SPOILER ALERT
As Dr. Frankenstein was to his creation he views it as an abomination and that it should be destroyed. He doesn’t have the attachement to it that a father should have. And from behind the fourth wall you know it should be destroyed. Its dangerous, seductive and bad news. Like a wedge that splits the wood in two this abomination however cute, and intelligent it may be splits its parents apart. Eventually he is seduced by his ‘daughter’ and you realize that she is actually made from is wife’s DNA.

The maternal side of the film at first cares for her child but soon falls out of the shadow of abuse in her childhood and casts her own shadow over her child. Her jealousy and issues with control finally come out when she tries to dehumanize, humiliate and abuse her. In the end she is raped by the newly sex changed creation and has one more opportunity to create and destroy a life.

The movie it self was seductive, chilling and disturbing on the emotional levels it was meant to be. I was bothered watching it knowing all the while that its wrong, that it should be stopped.

Overall it was an moderate film that gave a moderate satisfaction to the average film viewer. Not worth the big screen, but a possible renter.

  • I loved this movie, I thought it was twisted and bent without shying away from the obvious uncomfortable situations that arose. My girlfriend hated it tho mostly due to the uncomfortable adult scenes. Good movie but definitely not suited for children.
